Matthew in a Toddler Walkabout

Walkabout™

The Walkabout offers 15-lbs toddlers to 190-lbs adults, who cannot fully weight-bear, the exciting opportunity to learn and strengthen normal gait patterns and their associated muscle groups.

The Walkabout is a posterior support, weight-relieving gait trainer, which gives dynamic support throughout the rise and fall of the pelvis during ambulation. As the child steps forward, the active spring system allows the pelvis to drop down into the "heel strike" and "toe off" portion of gait, and then assists with elevation to allow for proper "swing-through".

Two of the greatest features of the Walkabout are that it is hands-free and it is open in the front. The individual can use their hands to interact with their environment, as well as having minimal barriers between themselves and their world.

Research has shown that the type of self-initiated exploration and interaction of one's environment made more possible with equipment like the Walkabout, is an important component in social and cognitive development. For more information, read the article "Encouraging Exploration" from the June/July edition of Rehab Management Magazine.
